I have enjoyed the site this eve. I am the daughter of Tilda Mae Amburgey, born in '24 at the mouth of Wolfpen Holler. She attended the Carr Creek High School and left for Virginia about 1946. She is the daughter of John H. and Ida Mae Noble Amburgey. "Johnny Burgey's" parents were Hiram and Leodicy Amburgey who owned a general store at the mouth of this same holler. This store, farm and cemetary were inherited through the Amburgey line and now are covered by the Carr Creek Lake. I was myself was raised on the east coast of Virginia near Yorktown. Many great childhood memories of good times and each 1 week summer vacation was spent in this holler near Hazard and Hindman. I often search the web for info on the Amburgeys to whom I am related. My mom often would spin tales of growning up on a farm with bunches of animals, brothers, sisters and other relatives, poverty that was not realized to them at that time and days when the only real world was divided between that which was reachable w/in a horses afternoon ride and that which was heard about on the radio.Anyone knowing about Amburgeys or Nobles please write. I hope to stumble upon this again. Thanks,Cathy

I remember Hazard with many fond memories as most of my relatives lived there. My father is Marshall Combs and mother is Alma Bryant Combs. I was born in 1949 in a house in Hazard. My father is a policeman that is pictured on this site. We lived in Wabaco on the hill behind the Penecostal church. My grandfather, Austin Combs, was an old regular Baptist preacher and we would go to church early in the morning & cross over a swinging bridge which scared me to death and listen to preachers preach till lunch, then have lunch on the grounds, use the outhouse and back to preaching till dark. I have eight tracks of Grandpa preaching. Does anyone remember Ms. Turners Store? That was a fun place too. She had her store right next to her house. Her house was surrounded by a white picket fence and she kept the store closed and we kids would stand at the fence and holler, 'Ms. Turner,' over and over and she would holler back. Then she would open the store and we would go in & buy what we wanted. She would lock up again and go back to the house. Grandma Stacy lived at the foot of the hill and she would sit on her front porch all day with a pistol under her long apron on her skirt in case anyone tried to bother her. She was a sweet lady but no one bothered her. I remember we would go to the showhouse downtown and it would cost us a dime to see the movie. Wow, those were the days. Well those are fun memories of Hazard. I have so many. Grandma and Grandpa (Jesse and Polly Bryant) lived right on the Ohio river and when the big flood came, it covered the entire first story of a 2 story house. I remember Grandpa would go out and chop off the head of a chicken, then throw it in the pantry where it would flop around for a time and when it stopped flopping around Grandma would get it out and scald it and we kids would pluck it. UGH, I would never do that today. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to remember a time gone by.
