December 1998 to January 1999

Living so far away, and with parents still living in the mountains,
it is very comforting to read, see and learn more of my home, both
past and present. Visiting this site which I stumbled upon, brings
old memories back to life again and makes me yearn even more for my
Old Kentucky Home. I hear the mountains whispering when I browse your
site. Thanks very much.

Thank you so much for having the Hazard, Ky. web sight. I have
located a cousin I didn't know about and an Aunt and Uncle I haven't
seen since I was seven. They are both younger than me. I haven't
spoken with my Uncle yet because I don't have a phone number. If
anyone knows Kenny Young in Michigan, ask him if he has a sister
Maxine, nicknamed Macki, and if his parents names were Hayes and Rose
Young. If this information is familiar to him, ask him to call me or
e-mail me at (803)749-4321 or JCH1946@hotmail.com Thank You, Joan

Very glad to see this site. I saw Shane on Mountain News this
morning and thought I would check out your site. I have not seen much
of it but I think it is great so far. My family moved to Hazard in
1959. My dad Lyle R. Shoemaker was the District Forester in Hazard
from 1959 to 1976 when he died. My brothers Barry, Dale and sister
Denise all graduated from Hazard High School. I was in the first
class from the new Hazard High School. My mother Ann Shoemaker worked
in social work and had a little store, Next to the radio station
called Ann's Boutique. We moved to Somerset in 1976 when my dad died
of a massive heart attack. I am a graduate of UK and am a Civil
Engineer. I've been married for 18 years and have three wonderful
daughters. Britani (13), Brooke (11) and Bree (3). My wife teaches
school in Pulaski County. I think of Hazard everyday and am thankful
of the many wonderful memories. Sort of like the old saying "You can
take the boy out of the hills but you can't take the hills out of the
boy. Keep up the good work on this site.

I have just read God-knows-how-many comments on this Hazard/Perry
County site, and you'd never believe how much it's made me realize
how much I miss being there... and I'm only 2 hours away! Me: the one
who vowed I'd never live in Hazard because it's too backwoods, and me
who said I hated it there merely because I lived there. I take it all
back. Even though I may live somewhere other than Hazard, I will
definitely visit often. How could anyone resist the clean, rainy
scent of those mountains after a rain, or the beauty of the snow on
the trees, or the lovely sheen of the sun on one of our lakes? Sigh!
Now that I've expressed my poetic views on Hazard, I should tell you
other readers about myself. I'm 19 years old and majoring in English
(with a minor in Creative Writing) here at Morehead State University.
I graduated in 1998 from Perry County Central high school, and would
LOVE for any other graduates of PCCHS or Dilce Combs Memorial high
school - or even R. W. Combs Elementary - to email me. Though keep in
mind that anyone who wants to may do so as well, for whatever reason.
Unless you're at Morehead too, in which case I can just go outside
and TALK to you. (I'm especially concerned with finding Melton
Vanzant. I haven't seen him in YEARS!) Thank you to the maintainers
of this site. Very well done. Encore! Encore!

Wonderful Site! As I viewed the guest comments I noticed that your
viewing guest are of all ages and are from many different areas of
the states. I was delivered by E. Boggs at the Mount Mary Hospital in
1966. My father was in the Air Force so my mother returned to Hazard
just so E. Boggs could deliver me; and each time she became pregnant
she would return to Hazard for her deliveries. We traveled and lived
in many different states while I was growing up; and I enjoyed every
moment of it. But once my father retired we moved back into Hazard. I
graduated from M. C. Napier in the year of 1984. Anyone interested in
contacting me you can E-Mail me at triciataylor@hotmail.com. I have
lived in this area since and have heard several interesting stories
about the people that have lived in the area and how things have
changed as they have lived their lives in the Hazard area. I love
history! Old photographs (any photographs) are historical memories!
(Those of you who enjoy old photographs can also check out the
magazine "Kentucky Explorer".) This site is very interesting I hope
that it continues to grow. I hope that many of the viewers continue
to send in their old photographs and I would also enjoy a location of
old "folk" - stories originating from the area.

Hello Hazard! I am probably one of the last of the generations
assisted into the world by Dr. Eli Boggs in the year 1977. I am a
student at Alice Lloyd College in neighboring Knott County, KY and I
have just been accepted into the University of KY Dental School. I
dread leaving Hazard, I have lived here all my life. It is so
comforting to walk down the nostalgic streets and meet friendly
neighbors around every corner. I guess the place (the only place) to
be on weekends is the North Fork Bar and Grill on mainstreet in the
old Watson's Dept. Store building. I'm sure it was something else
prior to Watson's but my 21 years of memories fails me sometimes. My
grandparents are Ishmael and Ida Watts. They owned the IGA (general
store) at Vicco for half a century until it burned down 3 years ago.
It was also a town landmark as well as my playground. My
grandfather's sister is wife to Bernice Steele of Steele's Auto. I
was a graduate of Dilce Combs the last year of its existence and am
now a huge Perry County Central Commodores fan. (Hello to Brian
Kilburn and Kent Campbell!) I presently work on weekends at Watson's
Peebles Dept. Store, and an additional hi out to Grady Varney, the
store's awesome manager! Please feel free to e-mail me anytime!

are involved in because of boredom. I'm only 18...I think I know what

Found out about the site from a cousin in Va. Thanks for building
it! Lots of memories, would like to see some pictures of the Shamrock
Restaurant & Chat & Chew Restaurant. I was delivered by Dr. Eli Boggs
(the greatest Dr. in the world) at Mt. Mary Hospital in '57, my
husband of 23 years was also delivered by Dr. Boggs at Mt. Mary. We
both are graduates of M. C. Napier, him in '74 me in '75. Both of my
children were born in Hazard. Although we live in Laurel County now,
Hazard will always be home. Anita

All of my family is originally from Eastern Ky. My mothers name is
Hamblin and my fathers name is McIntosh. My parents Earl and Mary
McIntosh moved back to Chavies, Ky. 8 years ago. My fondest childhood
memories are from Ky. getting together with all of my cousins, aunts,
uncles, etc. Spending time at Buckhorn Lodge and my uncle Raymonds
cabin across from Buckhorn Lake...My cousin Jeff Riley still has a
cabin there and he is the one that led me to this site... Thanks
Jeff..... I love this site......

Hello to all, I was just introduced to this web page by a friend of
mine who still lives in Hazard. I was very excited and the web page
is Great!! I attended M.C. Napier for 3 years and then moved to
Breathitt Co.. I would have graduated in 1982, so if anyone remembers
me please drop me a line. I grew up in a little town called Dwarf, I
left Hazard and moved to Breathitt Co. and after I graduated high
school, I moved here to Florence, KY (Boone Co.) I would like to see
some pics from the 70's, 80's and 90's but the ones you have are
great. My mom and dad were both born and raised in Hazard. My dad
still lives there. I haven't been back in quite sometime now, but
plan on it soon.
